Press Releases

Deutschland Tour 2023 takes place from 23 to 27 August

Along with the cycling calendar for the coming season, the world federation UCI has also announced the status and date of the Deutschland Tour 2023. The Tour will be held from Wednesday, 23 August, to Sunday, 27 August.

Germany's most important cycling race will also be staged next year as a five-day stage race in the UCI ProSeries, the competition below the WorldTour. This year's staging was a great success. More than 500,000 spectators watched the exciting professional race between Weimar and Stuttgart, and more than 5 million viewers watched the broadcasts via stream and on TV throughout Germany. The race for amateur athletes on the final Sunday was fully booked. Almost 6,000 athletes, from the kids of the "kinder Joy of Moving mini tour" to the participants of the Techniker Ride Tour, were attracted by the Deutschland Tour.

"2023 will build on the success of the Deutschland Tour 2022. The Tour has established itself with the best teams and riders in the world as well as with the participants of the Jedermann Tour. We are delighted that our traditional date at the end of August has been confirmed and that we can now finalise the details for the fifth edition of the new Deutschland Tour" says Matthias Pietsch, Managing Director at the Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Radsports.

Deutschland Tour 2022 with a spectacular finale in Stuttgart

August 28th, 2022

The 4th and last stage of the Deutschland Tour 2022 once again turned many things upside down. However, the top positions in the overall classification remained unchanged. Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers) took 5th place in the final stage, running over 186.6 kilometers from Schiltach to Stuttgart – just to win the Deutschland Tour 2022. Even the day's victory could not push Peio Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), the overall second, further ahead. However, the Spaniard can console himself with the green jersey, which he took last minute from Norwegian Alexander Kristoff.

Bilbao said after his stage win: "Fighting for the overall classification was hard. But I felt I could fight for the stage win today. That worked out. That's why it was a good week for me in my first race in Germany. For sure I will come back."

Even more confident was Yates.“’Lucky’ is not the word I would use. This win really means a lot for me. We tried to control the race from the beginning, but it felt like everybody wanted to be in the break today. At one point it got tight, but we stayed calm, didn’t panic and came away with the win.”

Behind Yates and Bilbao there was movement in the overall standings. At the last moment, Ruben Almeida Guerreiro (EF Education - EasyPost) made it to the podium. He was helped by the bonus seconds he gained as second of the day at the finish and at the day's bonification sprint. Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux) moved to the 4th place in the GC by sprinting to third place in the final stage. On top of that, he won the white jersey of the best young rider like he did last year.

Yates dominates on Schauinsland and takes overall lead of the Deutschland Tour

August 27th, 2022

At no point did Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers) leave any doubt that any other rider could win the queen stage of the Deutschland Tour up to the Schauinsland. While fellow favorites like Romain Bardet (Team DSM), Bauke Mollema (Trek - Segafredo) or the climbers from BORA - hansgrohe lost ground, the 30-year-old attacked early and rode the last eight kilometers solo towards the summit. Including bonus seconds, the Briton took a 30-second lead in the GC over Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), who finished second.

Behind Yates, the GC was shaken up. Bilbao is the new second. Mauri Vansevenant (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), who finished third in the stage, is now also in this position in the fight for the red jersey. However, the 23-year-old Belgian is at the top of the young rider classification, tied with Mattias Skjelmose (Trek - Segafredo). Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux) is one second behind, being the best German rider in the overall standings.

The other two classification jerseys remain with their previous owners. Alexander Kristoff (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux) defended the green jersey. Jakob Geßner (Lotto - Kern Haus) continues to wear the blue jersey. "We started today with the goal to get as many points as possible at the first KOM. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for the maximum points, but for remaining in the lead. A jersey like that on your shoulders always gives extra motivation. We didn't start here as a Continental team just to ride along."

Simon Geschke (German national team) had mixed feelings about his home stage. "From a sporting point of view, it was very average. But average is not enough on such a day at this level. My legs were not as they should have been. I have to accept that things are a bit tougher at the moment." The 36-year-old, on the other hand, was able to enjoy the atmosphere. "It was almost a bit like the Tour de France here at the Schauinsland despite the weather. I heard my name very often and was more excited than usually."

Right at the start in Freiburg, a group of six had broken away. The brothers Michiel and Abram Stockman (both Saris Rouvy Sauerland), Joshua Huppertz and Geßner (both Lotto - Kern Haus) had already been in breakaway groups on the previous stages. They were joined by Frederik Raßmann (Dauner - Akkon) and Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Soudal). Their maximum lead was more than seven minutes. In the climb to Luisenhöhe 15 kilometers before the finish, the leading group fell apart. As BORA - hansgrohe then rode at speed into the Schauinsland, the peloton also broke up. Then it was Yates' turn.

Due to the small gaps after the Schauinsland stage, the fight for the overall lead is now postponed to the last stage from Schiltach to Stuttgart. Spread over 186.6 kilometers, about 3000 meters of altitude have to be overcome - more than on any other stage of this year's Tour.

Kristoff extends his series of German wins at the Deutschland Tour

August 26th, 2022

After a frantic fight for the break of the day, the 2nd stage of the Deutschland Tour cooled down for quite a bit. But it was the calm before the storm because the last 40 kilometers were a real challenge. After EF Education - EasyPost split the peloton at the Amöneburg climb, it remained hectic for the last kilometers between Meiningen and Marburg. In the end, however, things were as they often are in a Deutschland Tour: Alexander Kristoff (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux) stood at the top of the winner's podium. For the Norwegian it was already the fourth stage win at the new Deutschland Tour – that's a best.

Kristoff, who also took over the green jersey of the points leader with his victory, is always lucky when racing in Germany. “I don’t know why, but Germany suits me. I also always have good results in Frankfurt. Maybe it’s because the climbs are not too long, and we do local circuits – like the Champs-Élysées. I prefer them.”

But the efforts of EF Education - EasyPost, which played a starring role in the final kilometers, were also paid off. Although the team's leader Alberto Bettiol was still behind Kristoff and second-placed Florian Sénéchal in the stage's classification, he took the overall leader's red jersey thanks to six bonus seconds he had secured at the finish and five kilometers earlier in the bonification sprint. Previous leader Filippo Ganna and Kristoff are tied behind.

Bettiol said after the race: ”We are not here to see the German landscape. We try to win. Unfortunately, we didn’t do today, but we were close. And we also reach the goal to take some bonus seconds for me. Because tomorrow I don’t think I’m gonna win. The climb is very hard, and I am happy to take some seconds on the best climbers here.”

Caleb Ewan wins first stage of the Deutschland Tour – Ganna defends red jersey

August 25th, 2022

Maybe the 500-metre-long finish line in Meiningen was a bit too long for Alexander Kristoff (Intermarche - Wanty - Gobert Materiaux). The Norwegian, who became the day's favorite after European Champion Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) was distanced on the last climb, had to see not only the new white jersey winner Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) pass but also the two young Germans Max Kanter (Movistar) and Felix Groß (UAE Emirates) as well as the French champion Florian Senechal (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl).

Stage winner Ewan knew another reason for this: "Downhill finishes are hard to time. But my team put me in a really good position. It was a very sweet victory after the last average months. But my team never lost faith in me and now I could pay something back for that."

Meanwhile, Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) stays the GC leader and defended the Deutschland Tour's red jersey in addition to the green jersey. "I didn't expect us to do this. But especially Egan (Bernal) worked hard to keep us in the top position in the overall classification." After the last climb, Ganna even impressed with an attack: "When Nils Politt attacked, I thought why not follow him. Then I did a bit more. But maybe that wasn't a great idea."

Until the last climb, the 171.7 kilometers between Weimar and Meiningen were dominated by an four-riders breakaway. Roman Duckert (Dauner - Akkon), Jakob Geßner, Joshua Huppertz (both Lotto - Kern Haus) and Michiel Stockman (Saris Rouvy Sauerland) got a maximum of four and a half minutes. While Huppertz dropped in the middle of the race, the remaining trio made it to the bonification sprint 20 kilometers before the end. But the peloton moved closer and swallowed the escapees in the following descent. For Geßner, however, the effort was worth it: the 22-year-old from Thuringia won all three KOMs and wears the blue jersey of the best climber tomorrow.

World champion Ganna takes first Red Jersey by winning the prologue of the Deutschland Tour

August 24th, 2022

Although he had to compete without a time trial machine – like everyone else – ITT world champion Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadier) won the prologue over 2.6 kilometers. With his win, he takes the first red jersey of the Deutschland Tour 2022. The Italian mastered the six curves through Weimar in 2.56,89 minutes with 53 km/h about two seconds faster than Bauke Mollema (Trek – Segafredo), who was another second faster than Nils Politt (Bora – Hansgrohe).

The 26-year-old Ganna, who recently had to give way to the two Swiss Stefan Bissegger and Stefan Küng at the European Championships in Munich, said: “It was a very intense race, at the finish line I was all-out. In the last corner I risked a little bit more and went all or nothing. But I was lucky and got through. I would have preferred an ITT bike, but in the end everything went well.

Preview of the Deutschland Tour 2022 – voices of the favorites

August 23rd, 2022

The Deutschland Tour 2022 begins tomorrow. The pros will complete five days of racing covering 710 kilometers between the start in Weimar and the grand finale on Sunday in Stuttgart. 20 teams, including 14 teams from the UCI WorldTour, compete in Germany's most important race. In the fight for stage victories and the red jersey for the overall winner, World, European and national champions meet Tour de France stage winners as well as young German talents.

Time trial world champion Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) expects a first face-off in the short opening already: "It's a really short prologue. It's unlucky we aren't using the TT bike but just the road bike, which means other riders can put in strong performances as well. Like the sprinters who also have a chance of a good result. I know with the TT bike it would be better for me, so we will see. Obviously, we'll go out there and do the best we can. We're just hoping to have a great race overall."

Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step - Alpha Vinyl Team) is particularly looking at the first two stages, which are profiled but offer opportunities for the sprinters. The stage winner of the Tour de France presents his new jersey of the European road champion. "I’m really excited to race in Deutschland Tour with my brand new jersey. It’s my first time in Deutschland Tour so I’m happy I can discover the many fans and the beautiful places around here. Having taken the European title here in Germany is very special to me, it’s one of my biggest wins so far. I’m honored to race in this jersey, and with the team we’ll give our all as always and try go for some nice results."

The German fans will primarily cheer for BORA - hansgrohe. The team enters the home race with the German champion and defending overall winner Nils Politt: "Racing at home is always something special and even more with the distinctive jersey of the German champion. After the races in Munich and Hamburg I really look forward to the five days of the Deutschland Tour. I'm ready! The preparation went well, and my form is very good. We'll see whether it's enough to defend my title – the course is much more difficult this year. But our goal is definitely to keep the title in the team."

Emanuel Buchmann joined the team's roster as a late addition: "The infection was a major setback. Nevertheless, I hope to go into the Deutschland Tour with my Vuelta form. My preparation was very good, and the last few days of training were better again. That's why I'm aiming for a good place in the GC. Especially because there's a mountain top finish for the first time. The fact that some strong climbers are also racing here motivates even more!"

One of the GC favorites is Romain Bardet (Team DSM), who is also focusing on the first mountain stage of the new Deutschland Tour: "I am happy to be back at the Deutschland Tour for the second time after 2018. This year the course will be slightly different compared to the last editions. The addition of the prologue will give the GC some shape already, but it will be decided at the mountain top finish on the Schauinsland, what I assume to be an exciting stage. As a team we will aim for a nice result in the GC but for stage results, also in the sprints, as well."

For Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers), the five days of racing at the Deutschland Tour are further steps towards his comeback. The 2019 Tour de France winner is looking forward to his first bike race in Germany: "It was fantastic to finally pin on a number again and to ride the Tour of Denmark with my teammates. I felt comfortable in the bunch and I am now looking forward to the Deutschland Tour. The race features a nice mix of stages. That gives me important race kilometers and intensities with a lot of variety. It's great to be here and to continue my comeback. I am really looking forward to testing my condition over the next five days."

As captain of the German national team, Simon Geschke will lead five talents such as German U23 champion Jannis Peter. It is not only for this reason that the Freiburg resident sees the Deutschland Tour as another highlight of his season: "The Freiburg stage is of course a very emotional day for me. This is my home race with a lot of support along the course, the profile suits me a lot and I probably know the course better than anyone else in the peloton. That's the day I'm looking at. Now it's a question of my form. It won't be as good as at the Tour de France and there wasn't much recovery after that either. I'll see how I start into the Deutschland Tour and then the Freiburg day will definitely release some extra strength."

Jedermann Tour is sold out - all starting places for 28 August are allocated

August, 19th, 2022

The demand for the Jedermann Tour 2022 was so great that already today all starting places are allocated. The race is fully booked - late registration online or on site is no longer possible! Traditionally, on the final day of the Deutschland Tour, amateur cyclists also get the opportunity for their own bike race. For 28 August, 3,400 enthusiastic cyclists have secured a place in Stuttgart and the Stuttgart region.

There is still a week to go before the start of the Jedermann Tour on Stuttgart's Schlossplatz. The anticipation of experiencing Stuttgart and the Stuttgart region on a road bike on closed roads is great. For the first time in the young history of the Jedermann Tour, the capacity of the race has been reached early. After the premiere in 2018, this year the Jedermann Tour celebrates a comeback in the capital of Baden-Württemberg and meets a region that is enthusiastic about racing bikes.

Top start list promises an exciting Deutschland Tour 2022

Two weeks before the start of the Deutschland Tour, the 20 teams announced their provisional starters. Led by the defending winner and German champion Nils Politt, BORA - hansgrohe will enter their home race with several leaders. This year's stage profiles also suit Maximilian Schachmann, third overall in 2018, and Lennard Kämna.

Right at the start of the Deutschland Tour on August 24th, one jersey will catch the eye: with Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers), the ITT world champion will start the races first ever prologue. A look at the competition shows that the switch from the rainbow jersey to the red leader jersey won't go without a fight. With a length of only 2.6 kilometers, the lap through the cultural city of Weimar is a matter for the fast riders. Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), winner of the opening time trial of this year's Tour de France, national champions like Bauke Mollema (Trek - Segafredo) and the powerful sprinters will give their best.

With Le Tour stage winner Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal), Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) and Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma), the international elite of fast men meets the German sprinters around Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious), Rick Zabel (Israel - Premier Tech) and Max Kanter (Movistar Team). Alexander Kristoff (Intermaché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux) will want to use his preference for German races again this year to win a stage.

Thuringia and "Oberhof 23" present the mountain jersey of the Deutschland Tour

21st July, 22

Thuringia's winter sports hotspot will be the venue for the World Championships in luge and biathlon next year. The Free State stands for sports enthusiasm in summer and winter - well seen on the blue jersey of the best climber in the Deutschland Tour. While the world's best cyclists ride the roads between the cultural city of Weimar and the Thuringian Forest in August, the top athletes meet in January and February on the Oberhof cross-country track and in the ice channel.

Seventeen mountain classifications - as many as never before - characterise the profile of the Deutschland Tour. The Thuringian Forest with the Rennsteig, Rhön, Kaiserstuhl and the Black Forest provide an impressive natural backdrop for this year's Tour.

After the prologue in Weimar, the Thuringian Forest awaits the fight for the mountain jersey right at the start. In Oberweißbach and shortly afterwards in Masserberg on the Rennsteig, the climb is almost 800 metres. Shortly before reaching the stage finish in Meiningen, more Thuringian points can be picked up in Kühndorf. "The Thuringian Forest with Oberhof is a popular holiday and sports region in the Free State. With the mountain jersey, we want to draw attention to the World Championships in January and February and attract sports enthusiasts to Thuringia," says Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee. The mountain jersey will carry this message until the end of the Tour.
